🚌 Transport Hacks
- City Bus Day Pass: ¥700 — unlimited rides. Covers 90% of tourist spots. Pays for itself after 3 rides (each ride is ¥230).
- Walk. Central Kyoto is surprisingly compact. Higashiyama temples are all walkable from each other in 15-20 minutes.
- Rent a bicycle: ¥800-1,000/day. The best way to explore northern Kyoto and Arashiyama. Flat terrain, excellent bike lanes.
- Subway 1-day pass: ¥800. Only useful if visiting Fushimi Inari + northern spots. Otherwise, bus is better.
- Don't get a JR Pass for Kyoto alone. It's ¥29,650 for 7 days — way more than local transport costs. See our practical info.
🎯 Free Activities
- Watch maiko on Hanamikoji Street — free, every evening around 5:30 PM. See our Gion guide.
- Kamo River sunset — grab a convenience store beer and join locals on the riverbank.
- Temple grounds — many temples charge for gardens but the grounds are free. Beautiful in any season.
- Nara day trip on the cheap — train ¥1,350 round trip. Deer park and Todai-ji are the main costs (~¥1,100). See our Nara guide.
- Hiking — trails around Arashiyama, Kurama, and Fushimi Inari are free.
📱 Money-Saving Apps & Tools
- Google Maps — essential for bus routes and walking directions
- Tabelog — Japan's restaurant review app. Filter by budget
- Suica/Pasmo IC card — tap-and-go transport. Slightly cheaper than cash fares
- 7-Eleven ATM — best exchange rates, works with international cards

💡 Golden rule: Eat where locals eat. If a restaurant has a picture menu and no English, it's probably cheap and delicious. The best budget food is never in tourist areas.
