Arashiyama Guide: Beyond the Bamboo Grove

📅 July 15, 2026 • ⏱️ 12 min read • ✍️ By Visiting Kyoto Team

Arashiyama is one of Kyoto's most visited districts — and for good reason. But most tourists see only the bamboo grove and leave. Here's the full Arashiyama, including the spots that make locals return again and again.

🚗 Getting to Arashiyama

  • JR Sagano Line: 15 min from Kyoto Station to Saga-Arashiyama (¥240, covered by JR Pass)
  • Hankyu Line: 20 min from Kawaramachi Station to Arashiyama (¥230)
  • Bus 28: 30 min from Kyoto Station (¥230)
  • Bicycle: 45 min ride from central Kyoto along the Katsura River — beautiful and free
💡 Pro tip: Arrive before 8 AM. The bamboo grove is magical when empty, and by 10 AM it's shoulder-to-shoulder. See our Fushimi Inari guide for the same early-bird strategy.

🎋 Must-See Sights

The Bamboo Grove (8:00 AM)

The reason everyone comes. Towering bamboo stalks create an otherworldly green tunnel. The sound of bamboo swaying in the wind is one of Japan's "100 Soundscapes." At 8 AM, you'll share it with maybe 20 people instead of 2,000.

Togetsukyo Bridge

The iconic "Moon Crossing Bridge" spanning the Katsura River with mountains behind. The view from the bridge changes dramatically with seasons — cherry blossoms in spring, autumn colors in November, snow in winter.

Tenryu-ji Temple

UNESCO World Heritage site with one of Kyoto's finest gardens. The "borrowed scenery" design uses the Arashiyama mountains as a backdrop. The garden is stunning in any season. Entry: ¥500 (garden only), ¥800 (garden + buildings).

Iwatayama Monkey Park

Hike 20 minutes up a hillside to find 120+ wild Japanese macaques with panoramic views of Kyoto. You feed the monkeys from inside a cage (they're outside). Entry: ¥550. The hike is worth it for the views alone.

Jojakko-ji Temple

Hillside temple with mossy stone steps, a pagoda, and sweeping city views. One of Arashiyama's most photogenic spots, especially in autumn. Entry: ¥500. See our hidden temples guide for more quiet spots.

Otagi Nenbutsu-ji

1,200 hand-carved rakan (disciple) statues, each with a unique, often humorous expression. At the far end of Arashiyama, most tourists never make it here. Entry: ¥300. Budget 30 minutes to explore all the faces.

🍽️ Where to Eat

  • Sagano-yu: Converted public bathhouse into a cafe. Matcha and wagashi in a stunning bathhouse setting.
  • Tao: Organic vegetable lunch sets with mountain views. Popular with locals.
  • Yoshimura: Handmade soba overlooking the Togetsukyo Bridge. The soba-making demonstration is fascinating.
  • Arashiyama Yoshida: Traditional Kyoto sweets shop. Try the warabi mochi.

🛶 Activities

  • River boat ride: 30-60 min on the Hozu River. ¥4,100 per person. Scenic and relaxing.
  • Sagano Scenic Railway: A charming little train through the Hozu River valley. ¥880 one way. Best in autumn.
  • Kimono rental: Several shops near the station rent kimono for the day (~¥3,000-5,000). Walking the bamboo grove in kimono is unforgettable.
  • Bamboo craft workshop: Make your own bamboo basket or wind chime. Book at Arashiyama Bamboo Workshop.
