Day Trip to Nara from Kyoto: The Complete Guide

📅 July 22, 2026 • ⏱️ 10 min read • ✍️ By Visiting Kyoto Team

Nara — Japan's first permanent capital (710-784 AD) — is just 45 minutes from Kyoto. It packs the country's largest Buddha, a forest full of sacred deer, and some of Japan's oldest buildings. Here's how to make the perfect day trip.

🚆 Getting There

From Kyoto Station:
JR Nara Line: 45 min, ¥710. Covered by JR Pass.
Kintetsu Railway: 35 min, ¥640. Arrives closer to deer park. NOT covered by JR Pass.
First train: ~5:50 AM (JR), ~6:00 AM (Kintetsu).
Last return: ~11:00 PM (both lines).
💡 Which train? Take Kintetsu TO Nara (faster, closer to sights) and JR BACK to Kyoto (more frequent departures). Total cost: ~¥1,350 round trip.

🦌 Nara Park & Deer

Nara Park is home to 1,200+ freely roaming sika deer, considered sacred messengers of the gods. They're surprisingly gentle — but they WILL bow to you expecting crackers.

  • Deer crackers (shika senbei): ¥200 per pack from vendors throughout the park
  • Best behavior: Bow to the deer first — they often bow back
  • Watch for: Does with fawns in spring/early summer can be protective
  • Photos: Sit on the ground with crackers — deer will gather around you

📍 Full Day Itinerary

Morning (9 AM - 12 PM)

  1. Todai-ji (9:00 AM) — Home to the Great Buddha (Daibutsu), the world's largest bronze Buddha at 15 meters tall. The wooden hall housing it is the world's largest wooden building. Entry: ¥600. Allow 45-60 min.
  2. Kasuga Taisha (10:30 AM) — Shinto shrine with 3,000 stone and bronze lanterns along a forest path. The approach through ancient forest is magical. Entry: ¥500 for inner sanctuary.
  3. Kofuku-ji (11:30 AM) — Five-story pagoda, second tallest in Japan. Free to view from outside; museum entry ¥700.

Lunch (12 PM - 1 PM)

Eat in the area around Nara Park. Try:

  • Kakinoha sushi: Nara's specialty — sushi wrapped in persimmon leaves. Try Hiraso (since 1861).
  • Mochi: Nakatanidou's famous high-speed mochi pounding is a show in itself.
  • Street food: Inari sushi, dango, and matcha soft serve along the approach.

Afternoon (1 PM - 4 PM)

  1. Isuien Garden (1:00 PM) — Two beautiful gardens with "borrowed scenery" of Todai-ji's roof and Wakakusayama hill. ¥1,200. Allow 30 min.
  2. Ukimido Pavilion (2:00 PM) — A floating pavilion on Sagi-ike Pond. Beautiful reflections, especially in autumn. Free.
