We're a small team with one shared obsession: Kyoto. We've been back more times than we can casually mention at a dinner party, and every trip still turns up something new — a side street we'd never walked down, a temple garden that looks completely different in a season we hadn't visited before, a bowl of noodles that quietly became the best thing we ate all year.
Why Kyoto, specifically
Japan has no shortage of extraordinary cities, but Kyoto is the one that pulled us back again and again. It's a place where over a thousand years of history sits right alongside ordinary daily life — a centuries-old shrine at the end of a residential street, a Michelin-level meal next door to a neighborhood ramen counter. The more time we spent there, the more we wanted to understand it properly, not just visit it.
Why this site exists
Most travel guides read like they were written after a single, rushed trip. We wanted to build something different: a guide shaped by repeat visits, in every season, made by people who've actually stood in line at Fushimi Inari before sunrise and gotten caught in a sudden downpour in Arashiyama with no umbrella. Every guide on this site — from neighborhood walks to seasonal timing to the practical, unglamorous logistics of getting around — comes from things we've actually done, not just researched.
What you'll find here
We try to cover Kyoto the way we'd explain it to a friend: honest opinions about which temples are worth the crowds and which aren't, real budget numbers, season-by-season advice, and neighborhood guides that go beyond the handful of sights everyone already knows about. We update our guides as things change, because train schedules, opening hours, and even crowd patterns shift from year to year.
