Kyoto is a city of seasons, and every month paints it differently. Whether you are chasing pink sakura, blazing maple leaves, or snow-dusted shrines, there is a perfect month for you. Here is our month-by-month breakdown of weather, events, crowds, and highlights.

Golden rule: book accommodation six months ahead for November and late March–April. Kyoto fills up fast in peak weeks.

January (1–8°C)

Events: New Year hatsumode at Yasaka Shrine; rare light snow. Crowds: quiet after January 3. Best for: serene temples. Tip: pack thermal layers and hand warmers.

February (2–9°C)

Events: plum blossoms at Kitano Tenmangu from mid-month. Crowds: low. Best for: the season's first blossoms. Tip: the plum festival is free and lovely.

March (6–13°C)

Events: sakura season begins late month in southern Kyoto. Crowds: rising quickly. Best for: blossoms without the worst crowds. Tip: follow the forecast — blossoms open fast.

April (10–19°C)

Events: full hanami season; Miyako Odori geisha dances. Crowds: peak, especially weekends. Best for: iconic sakura photos. Tip: go at dawn or dusk for quieter views.

May (14–23°C)

Events: Aoi Matsuri on May 15; warm, humid days arrive. Crowds: high but softer than April. Best for: festivals and green gardens. Tip: carry an umbrella — rain becomes common.

June (17–25°C)

Events: tsuyu rainy season; hydrangeas bloom at Sanzen-in. Crowds: low. Best for: budget travel and quiet temples. Tip: indoor sights like the Railway Museum shine on wet days.

July (22–30°C)

Events: the spectacular Gion Matsuri, especially July 17 and 24. Crowds: heavy during festival week. Best for: Japan's biggest festival. Tip: book festival-viewing seats early and stay hydrated.

August (23–31°C)

Events: Gozan no Okuribi bonfires on August 16. Crowds: busy but manageable. Best for: evenings along the Kamo River. Tip: plan indoor sights for humid afternoons.

September (20–27°C)

Events: typhoon season; humidity lingers. Crowds: low. Best for: quiet exploration and lower prices. Tip: keep plans flexible in case a typhoon shifts your route.
