One Day

Eastern & Central Kyoto Highlights

Base: This route assumes you start from Kyoto Station (or arrive there first thing) and return there at the end for onward travel. Everything below is within a 20-minute bus or subway ride of the station.
5:30 AM

Fushimi Inari Taisha

Two stops from Kyoto Station on the JR Nara Line. Hike up through the vermillion torii gates while they're still empty — even 30 minutes up and back is worthwhile if you're pressed for time.

Free · Open 24/7 · 90 min
7:30 AM

Breakfast near Kyoto Station

Grab onigiri and coffee from a station convenience store, or a quick sit-down breakfast set in the station building.

Kiyomizu-dera Temple

Bus 206 from the station (about 20 min). The wooden stage over the hillside is Kyoto's most photographed viewpoint.

Entry ¥400 · 45 min
9:45 AM

Sannenzaka & Ninenzaka

Walk down through these preserved lantern-lit lanes toward Gion — tea shops, pottery stores, and machiya houses.

Yasaka Shrine & Maruyama Park

A free, always-open shrine leading into Kyoto's most famous park.

Free · 30 min

¥1,500-2,500 · 60 min
1:30 PM

Nishiki Market

Walk or take the subway from Gion-Shijo to Nishiki (about 15 min). Graze through Kyoto's Kitchen.

Free entry · Budget ¥1,000 grazing · 45 min
2:30 PM

Nijo Castle

Subway (Tozai Line) to Nijojo-mae, about 10 minutes. The nightingale floors are worth the detour even on a tight schedule.

Entry ~¥800 · 60 min
4:00 PM

Back to Kyoto Station

Subway back to the station (about 15 min). Browse Isetan department store, grab souvenirs, or catch the view from Kyoto Tower before your onward train.

Optional Kyoto Tower ¥900
One-day tip: This route deliberately skips Arashiyama and Kinkaku-ji — both are wonderful but sit far to the west, and fitting them in would mean cutting everything else short. If they're a must, swap out Nijo Castle and go straight from Nishiki Market to Kinkaku-ji instead.
Budget summary (per person): Entries ~¥2,100 · Food ~¥3,000 · Transport ~¥1,200 · Total ~¥6,300 (~$42) for the day. See our Budget Guide for more ways to save.
